I WILL STEP BACK...JUST A FEW MINUTES..INTO THE PAST TO REMEMBER...IF YOU STILL HAVE YOUR FATHER...ONE OF THE NICEST THINGS YOU COULD DO WOULD BE TO WRITE...(NOT E-MAIL) DOWN THOSE GOOD MEMORIES YOU REMEMBER AS A YOUNG CHILD GROWING UP AND PUT IT IN THE MAIL...ALTHOUGH I HAD MY FATHER ONLY FIFTEEN YEARS...I LEARNED A LOT FROM HIM..TAKEN SUDDENLY AT THE AGE OF 52...MY MOTHER..47..I DIDN'T GET TO WRITE SUCH A LETTER...BUT THIS IS WHAT I CAN REMEMBER.  HE LOVED TO FISH AND HUNT...HE SHOT SO MANY DUCKS THAT MY MOTHER HAD FEATHERS DRYING IN THE BASEMENT AND THE ATTIC AND SHE MADE EIGHT PILLOWS FROM JUST THE DOWN...HE LOVED TO FISH AND HE AND I WOULD GO OUT IN THE LITTLE WOOD BOAT, WITH THE 1 AND 1/2 HORSE POWER MOTOR (KICKER)....I CAN'T BELIEVE I REMEMBERED THIS! ...STRAIGHT OUT IN FRONT OF THE LITTLE COTTAGE HE BUILT IN 1926.  I WAS IN CHARGE OF THE ANCHOR AND LOOKING FOR TALL WEEDS.  HE WOULD CUT THE ENGINE AND WE WOULD JUST DRIFT, QUIETLY UNTIL HE WOULD SAY.'NOW!' AND I WOULD HOLD ON TO THE ROPE SLIPPING FRANTICALLY FROM MY HANDS..UNTIL IT HIT BOTTEM...AND THEN I WOULD TIE IT SECURELY TO THE BOAT.  THIS HAD TO BE 20-30 FEET DEEP...AND THEN WAIT FOR THE 'TUG' ON THE LINE AFTER HE HAD SECURELY PUT A MINNOW ON THAT HOOK...STRAIGHT DOWN UNTIL THE SINKER HIT THE BOTTEM...AND THEN TWO OR THREE REELINGS TO GET IT JUST OFF THE BOTTOM...THEN WAIT...PRETTY SOON YOU WOULD FEEL THAT ANTICIPATED TUG AND THEN 'SET THE HOOK.'...THE OLD ROD WAS BENDING NEARLY IN HALF...AND I WOULD HEAR THE WORDS..'YOU GOT HIM!'..MY FATHER WITH THE NET READY ..SAYING KEEP IT TIGHT...AS THIS FEROCIOUS FISH WAS FIGHTING FOR IT'S LIFE...AND THEN...INTO THE NET IT WENT THRASHING BACK AND FORTH ON THE FLOOR OF THE BOAT...WHAT EXCITEMENT..SMILES..'I DID IT!'..MY FATHER, PROUDLY UNHOOKING THAT WALLEYE OR NORTHERN AND REACHING FOR THE 'STRINGER' AND OVER THE BOAT HE WENT.(THE FISH)..WAITING FOR A COMPANION .  WE DIDN'T DO 'CATCH AND RELEASE'..ONLY THE SMALL PERCH AND SUNFISH WERE RELEASED AND MAYBE A CRAPPIE OR TWO..OTHERWISE ANYTHING  OF A GOOD SIZE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE COTTAGE AND PUT INTO A 'LIVE BOX' THAT RESIDED BY OUR NARROW WOODEN DOCK THAT MY FATHER HAD BUILT.I CAN REMEMBER SEVERAL GOOD-SIZED FISH RESIDING IN HERE UNTIL MY FATHER DECIDED THAT IT WAS TIME TO CLEAN THE FISH..OUTSIDE BETWEEN TWO TREES HE HAD A BOARD WHERE HE DID ALL THE FISH-CLEANING..OUR CAT, SNOOZER, WAS WAITING PATIENTLY FOR THE SCRAPS MY FATHER WOULD DROP..ACCIDENTALLY??.THEN. HE WOULD DIG A DEEP HOLE AND BURY THE FISH SCRAP IMMEDIATELY....INSIDE THIS SMALL ORIGINAL COTTAGE MY FATHER BUILT IN 1926 WAS A SMALL PORCH HE ADDED IN 1931 AND THEN THOSE TWO SMALL BEDROOMS THAT WERE ADDED IN 1951 MAKING IT, NOW...IN THE 50'S ABOUT 24' BY 20'..ALL WE NEEDED...IT WAS A 'CASTLE' TO ME..I REMEMBER SEVERAL TIMES BEING OUT IN FRONT OF THE COTTAGE...IN OUR SPECIAL FISHING HOLE...SEEING A TINY LIGHT THAT MY MOTHER HAD ON FOR US TO FIND OUR WAY BACK HOME...NOW...AFTER THE FISH WERE CLEANED...MOTHER TOOK OVER..GETTING THAT JAR OF BACON FAT OUT FROM THAT TINY REFRIGERATOR..A LITTLE SALT/PEPPER/FLOUR AND THE MOST DELICIOUS SMELL EMERGING FROM THAT TINY COTTAGE..IF YOU HAVE NEVER HAD YOUR FISH FRIED THIS WAY..(FORGET WHAT THEY SAY IS BAD FOR YOU!)...YOU HAVE TO TRY IT...I BELIEVE THE WORD IS 'SCRUMPTIOUS!'..I WOULD ALWAYS GET THE TAIL PIECE...FOR THERE WERE NO BONES HERE...ALTHOUGH MY FATHER WAS A 'MASTER' AT CLEANING FISH...HE WOULD FEEL WITH HIS FINGERS AND REMOVE THEM...WHEN I SAT DOWN THIS MORNING AT MY COMPUTER I DIDN'T KNOW THAT I WOULD WRITE THIS BUT I AM SO HAPPY THAT I DID...WE ALL HAVE GREAT MEMORIES THAT WE REMEMBER...I WILL CONTINUE LATER...THANK YOU FATHER...FOR ALL YOU TAUGHT ME!..CE...I WENT OUTSIDE FOR A MINUTE AND TOOK SOME PICTURES OF MY NEIGHBORS ON FATHERS' DAY....THE PICTURE OF KEN GRILLING WAS TAKEN EARLIER..THEN I TALKED TO THE ROOFER ....SAM... ON DOING MY GARAGE ROOF..(ACTUALLY THE SAME AS THE NEW HOUSE)...SO HERE ARE THE PICTURES..OF FATHERS AND BOB'S GARDEN..CE...JUNE 21ST..2009...CONTINUING ON ABOUT MY FATHER...USUALLY I CAN REMEMBER ONLY ABOUT TWO DAYS BACK...(THIS IS WHY I DO 'MORNING PAGES...WHERE I REALLY TELL EXACTLY WHAT IS GOING ON..MORE OR LESS...MY DIARY)..PARTS OF THIS WILL BE INCLUDED IN THE BOOKLET I WILL WRITE ABOUT MY JEWELRY BUSINESS...UNTIL THEN...HERE IS WHAT I REMEMBER ABOUT MY FATHER:  I WAS VERY CLOSE TO MY FATHER BECAUSE HE WAS ALWAYS BUILDING SOMETHING..WE HAD A 'COAL ROOM' WHERE A LOAD OF COAL WAS DEPOSITED EVERY FALL TO TAKE US WARMLY THROUGH THE WINTER...ALSO WE HAD ANOTHER PLACE WHERE ENDS OF SCRAP WOOD WERE THROWN DOWN THE CHUTE FROM THE OUTSIDE, BY THE BACK STEPS..I STILL HAVE THAT LITTLE TABLE AND CHAIRS I MADE FROM IT AND HAD MY BEST FRIEND, LORRAINE, OVER FOR KOOL-AID AND WE COULD SIT ON THE CHAIRS I MADE FROM THAT OLD SCRAP LUMBER...(SECURELY NAILED WITH AN ABUNDANT AMOUNT OF NAILS!)  MY FATHER WAS USUALLY IN CHARGE OF MAKING THE FIRES...DOWN HE WOULD GO TO THAT HUGE FURNACE AND TRY TO KEEP IT GOING THROUGHOUT THE DAY/NIGHT...EVERY SO OFTEN I WOULD BE IN CHARGE OF TAKING THE 'KLINKERS' OUT...AMAZING THAT I CAN STILL REMEMBER THAT NAME AFTER OVER 50 YEARS...THAT MEMORY OF OURS IS TRULY AMAZING!..MY FATHER WORKED AT THE NORTHERN PACIFIC SHOPS ON LAUREL STREET PROBABLY 5-6 BLOCKS AWAY...EVERY NOON..(YOU COULD SET YOUR CLOCK BY THE NOON WHISTLE) IT WOULD BLOW AND ALL THE MEN...WHO LIVED CLOSEBY..WOULD WALK HOME FOR THEIR 'DINNER'...IT WASN'T CALLED LUNCH..IT WAS A BIG DINNER THAT MY MOTHER...FAITHFULLY HAD READY FOR HIM EACH DAY...BEFORE I WENT TO SCHOOL I WOULD RIDE MY TRIKE ABOUT A BLOCK AND MEET HIM...'SUPPER' WAS THE EVENING MEAL..(KNOWN NOW AS DINNER)..THEN HE WOULD WALK BACK TO 'THE SHOPS' AND CONTINUE BEING A 'MACHINIST' UNTIL HE...AND ALL THE REST OF BRAINERD... HEARD THE 4 O'CLOCK WHISTLE AGAIN...THE NP SHOPS IN THE 30'S...40'S...AND 50'S WAS PROABLY WHAT THE PAPER MILL BECAME IN THE LATE 50'S...60'S...70'S   ETC...THE MAIN EMPLOYER FOR THE TOWN OF BRAINERD...I GUESS THIS IS CALLED 'NOSTALGIA'  BRINGING BACK 'GOOD MEMORIES' FROM THE PAST...WILL CONTINUE AT A LATER TIME....THIS IS VERY 'THERAPEUTIC'...FOR ME... AND VERY RELAXING....WILL WRITE LATER ABOUT MY FATHER ... A SEMI-PRO BASEBALL PLAYER AND TRAVELED AROUND BEFORE I WAS BORN BUT UNFORTUNATELY BROKE HIS ANKLE...SLIDING INTO 3RD BASE..CE
I WAS ATHLETIC IN A TIME WHEN GIRLS SHOULDN'T SWEAT!...WE HAD GAA...GIRLS' ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION...WHERE WE COULD GO AND PLAY BASKETBALL ONE EVENING A WEEK...NOW..GET THIS...AT THAT TIME WE COULD ONLY DRIBBLE TWICE...AND THEN WE HAD TO PASS THE BALL..(HOW STUPID IS THAT??...ALSO FORWARDS/GUARDS COULD ONLY GO HALF-COURT)...I HAVE PICTURES FROM THOSE TIMES AND IF I EVER LEARN HOW TO 'SCAN'..(MY PRINTER DOES HAVE IT)..I MIGHT JUST PUT THOSE PICTURES UP...IRONICALLY  MOST OF THESE FRIENDS WILL BE HERE IN AUGUST..MOST OF US LEARNED HOW TO PLAY THE PIANO...I CAN REMEMBER THROWING MYSELF ON THE BED..I DIDN'T WANT TO PRACTICE..(NOW THIS WAS A BIG INVESTMENT FOR MY PARENTS IN THOSE DAYS...TO BUY THAT BEAUTIFUL SPINNET PIANO)  I ALWAYS 'FELT' I WASN'T AS GOOD AS KAREN...SHE HAD A PIANO, TOO..BUT WHEN I WENT THROUGH MY SHEET MUSIC AND SAW THAT AT 11 YEARS OF AGE...I PLAYED..'HUNGARIAN RHAPSODY'..(I CAN STILL GO TO THE PIANO AND PLAY THOSE FIRST EIGHT BARS)..I NOW REALIZE THAT I WAS REALLY GOOD!...ANYWAY, LORRAINE AND I WOULD RATHER PLAY TENNIS...I WAS SO GLAD THAT MY FATHER WAS ALIVE TO SEE MY FIRST TENNIS TROPHY ..FOR HE WAS PROUD OF ME..
ANOTHER TIME I AM SURE HE WAS SMILING WAS WHEN ALL THE CHURCHES HAD A GIRLS' SOFTBALL TEAM AND I WAS THERE TO WATCH  MY COUSIN KAREN, SITTING WITH MY UNCLE WAITING FOR MY DAD, WHEN HER TEAM NEEDED ANOTHER PLAYER AND I VOLUNTEERED..MY FATHER ARRIVED AND ASKED HIS BROTHER..'WHERE'S CAROLE?' AND MY UNCLE SAID,' SHE IS UP TO BAT' I HIT A TRIPLE....GOOD TIMING!!...CE
